Year of the ‘Stache

I had a great idea. Why not grow a moustache like I did last year but only this time, document it and put the pics on a website? Upon further research I found the domain mymoustacheand.me to be open. It was in the stars. So I bought it and got to work. In less than a month I put together the site and January 1st it was launched.
After that I had to justify it a little more so I took the opportunity to hand craft some HTML5 and CSS3 along with a tiny bit of jQuery (I'm slowly learning)!
I have no idea what I was thinking but the feedback so far is positive with the word "ridiculous" followed by laughter coming up quite a bit. Take a look and let me know what you think.

The New derekbender.com!
It has been awhile since I first announced the redesign of this site and I'm now happy to make it live! I initially started the redesign way back in February with mockups and planning. The theme is built on top of Wordpress which I've been learning and using over the past couple years and without it, this site probably wouldn't be possible.
If you want the full viewing experience download a copy of Safari 4. I used a lot of CSS3 in the making of the site, such as the @font-face, text-shadow and multiple background properties. Currently only Safari 4 supports all the cool new CSS3.
Let me know what you think of the new design in the comments. I have even more cool stuff coming soon too.

My New Year's List
I've never been a believer in making any sort of New Year's resolutions. I hate the idea of saying you'll do something and end up not doing it, which is what happens to most resolutions after January. But I saw a couple really good resolution lists (most notably Kevin Rose's and Lee Munroe's) and thought it would be a good idea to have a list to guide me in this next year instead of random ideas and thoughts bouncing around in my head. Then I thought it would be a good idea to throw them up here to share. I'm using the word "list" instead of "resolutions" because more often then not, resolutions are broken. So, in no particular order, here's my list for 2009! Continue reading…

Soul Searching Plus Weekend Update
Its been awhile since I've made an update to this blog, mostly due to my other little side project, Helpmepaymyloans.com. Writing 3 to 4 posts a week has really soaked up all my extra time. But recently I've had some time to think. I like writing for Helpmepaymyloans but I love design. So I'm cutting back my time on HMPML so as to put more time into other projects I'd like to take on. And of course NFi. *wink* I'll still be doing HMPML but my writing time will be drastically scaled back.
So what's been going on in the last month? Well, NFi is in full force; rebranding and redesigning the website from the ground up. Work is pouring in at a steady rate. Big stuff. Apart from NFi I have a few sites that I'm working on. I'll have updates on those as soon as they start finishing up.
As for stuff I want to work on: this blog's redesign is on the top of the list. I have a few mockups but its been such awhile that I want to revisit them and tweak them a bit before I start building it out. By the way, Wordpress 2.5 gets a thumbs up. Also look for updates to the portfolio. Lotsa new stuff to put up. And I'd like to redesign HMPML too.

BarCamp Orlando One Week Away!

BarCamp is set to take over Wall St. in downtown Orlando next weekend. This time the community tech event will be spaced out over 2 days: April 5th, Dev Day and April 6th Media Day.
BarCampOrlando is a community building event which happens twice a year to brings together people from different backgrounds to share and learn from each other. There will be people who know Java, .NET, Ruby, PHP, and other technologies coming together for Dev Day, and there will be people who know film, music, photography, graphic design, podcasting, and even other new Media coming together for Media Day
I'm looking forward to the weekend. I'll be attending both days where I'm sure I'll hear some great talks. My company, NFi Studios, will be sponsoring the event along with the community's top technology businesses. Check out the BarCamp Orlando website for more info.

Safari 3.1

I installed Safari 3.1 a few hours ago and didn't really think much of it. Then I came upon an article that gave a rundown of the new features that Apple has packed into the new version. I went back to Safari and I'm very impressed at what Apple has done. Continue reading…

BarCamp and FOWA in Miami

Yes I'll be attending BarCamp Miami and the Future of Web Apps Conference in Miami this weekend. I'm really excited to be going! I've never been to Miami before so I'm kinda expecting something along the lines of Vice City and Scarface. But since I'll be at a tech conference, instead of Al Pacino holding a machine gun, he'll be holding an iPhone or talking on a bluetooth headset. Continue reading…

To sum it up: Helpmepaymyloans.com is dedicated to to bringing you news, resources and statistics about student loans, colleges and general finance management. Continue reading…

MemberFuse™ is Social Networking Done Right

For those of you that have been to the portfolio side of this site, you may recognize the name MemberFuse™. For awhile now the place I work for, NFi Studios, who coincidently loves puppies, has been working on a social networking application called MemberFuse™. What is this MemberFuse™ you speak of? Well, I'll tell you...

Ch-Ch-Ch-Changes and Announcements

I was thinking about a few things today; things I need to do, work, my site and this blog were all on my mind. I had a couple ideas specifically about this blog that I would like to implement that hopefully all of you readers will like (yes, all 2 of you). So I'll get right to it. Continue reading…
