I had a great idea. Why not grow a moustache like I did last year but only this time, document it and put the pics on a website? Upon further research I found the domain mymoustacheand.me to be open. It was in the stars. So I bought it and got to work. In less than a month I put together the site and January 1st it was launched.

After that I had to justify it a little more so I took the opportunity to hand craft some HTML5 and CSS3 along with a tiny bit of jQuery (I'm slowly learning)!

I have no idea what I was thinking but the feedback so far is positive with the word "ridiculous" followed by laughter coming up quite a bit. Take a look and let me know what you think.

I initially started the redesign way back in February with mockups and planning. The theme is built on top of Wordpress which I've been learning and using over the past couple years and without it, this site probably wouldn't be possible.

If you want the full viewing experience download a copy of Safari 4. I used a lot of CSS3 in the making of the site, such as the @font-face, text-shadow and multiple background properties. Currently only Safari 4 supports all the cool new CSS3.

Let me know what you think of the new design in the comments. I have even more cool stuff coming soon too.

I've never been a believer in making any sort of New Year's resolutions. I hate the idea of saying you'll do something and end up not doing it, which is what happens to most resolutions after January. But I saw a couple really good resolution lists (most notably Kevin Rose's and Lee Munroe's) and thought it would be a good idea to have a list to guide me in this next year instead of random ideas and thoughts bouncing around in my head. Then I thought it would be a good idea to throw them up here to share. I'm using the word "list" instead of "resolutions" because more often then not, resolutions are broken. So, in no particular order, here's my list for 2009!

Read a few books, I'm a fan of Bradbury and I would like to explore some more of his books.

Get into apparel design. I've made a few designs already (devotionclothing.com) but I'd really like to explore the medium in-depth and of course, I'd like to get a few printed.

Speak at an event. BarCamp Miami is coming up in March, any suggestions for topics?

Design a font. This one is big. I've started sketching in my moleskine but it seems the end of the year has monopolized my free time. No time like the present to start this back up.

Get to church more

Start exercising regularly. Wow, this is the one that everyone breaks...

Take over my student loan payments. This one will make my parents happy :) Without them I wouldn't be here and this year I'm going to start paying them back.

Buy less crap. We are a society of mindless consumers and last thing any of us needs is more junk polluting our lives.

Sit by Lake Eola and work. Florida has some amazing weather and on the really nice days I wished I could go outside and work. Now i can. Yah MacBook!

Learn jQuery. Nothing to crazy, I'm a designer after all, but some cool, simple stuff would be very helpful.

Watch more films! Been missing my quality time with my Netflix queue. Big fan of the zombie sub-genre. Also I'd like to watch some Kubrick that I've not had the chance to see.

Redesign my site

Sell helpmepaymyloans.com. If you or anyone you know is interested in buying a successful startup finance blog, please email me!

Design and get a tattoo. Don't read this one Mom.

Do a new illustration at least once a month

Its been awhile since I've made an update to this blog, mostly due to my other little side project, Helpmepaymyloans.com. Writing 3 to 4 posts a week has really soaked up all my extra time. But recently I've had some time to think. I like writing for Helpmepaymyloans but I love design. So I'm cutting back my time on HMPML so as to put more time into other projects I'd like to take on. And of course NFi. *wink* I'll still be doing HMPML but my writing time will be drastically scaled back.

So what's been going on in the last month? Well, NFi is in full force; rebranding and redesigning the website from the ground up. Work is pouring in at a steady rate. Big stuff. Apart from NFi I have a few sites that I'm working on. I'll have updates on those as soon as they start finishing up.

As for stuff I want to work on: this blog's redesign is on the top of the list. I have a few mockups but its been such awhile that I want to revisit them and tweak them a bit before I start building it out. By the way, Wordpress 2.5 gets a thumbs up. Also look for updates to the portfolio. Lotsa new stuff to put up. And I'd like to redesign HMPML too.

BarCamp is set to take over Wall St. in downtown Orlando next weekend. This time the community tech event will be spaced out over 2 days: April 5th, Dev Day and April 6th Media Day.

BarCampOrlando is a community building event which happens twice a year to brings together people from different backgrounds to share and learn from each other. There will be people who know Java, .NET, Ruby, PHP, and other technologies coming together for Dev Day, and there will be people who know film, music, photography, graphic design, podcasting, and even other new Media coming together for Media Day

I'm looking forward to the weekend. I'll be attending both days where I'm sure I'll hear some great talks. My company, NFi Studios, will be sponsoring the event along with the community's top technology businesses. Check out the BarCamp Orlando website for more info.

I installed Safari 3.1 a few hours ago and didn't really think much of it. Then I came upon an article that gave a rundown of the new features that Apple has packed into the new version. I went back to Safari and I'm very impressed at what Apple has done.

Have you ever done a search, clicked through a bunch of pages and not found what you were looking for? Instead of hitting the 'Back' button a few hundred times to get back to your original search results, Search Snapback resets the search with just a click. Very useful.

A feature I haven't heard too much about but am very eager to check out is extended support for CSS3 and downloadable web fonts!

But the big feature I'm most excited to see with 3.1 is the Web Inspector. I'll preface this by saying that I like Firefox but I really like Safari, but the reason I use Firefox over Safari everyday is because of Firebug. Its standard in my work and an invaluable tool that only is for Firefox. With that said I think I'm going to be switching to Safari full time very soon. Safari's Web Inspector takes Firefox's Firebug and improves it 10 fold. Browse/view images and a few other features stand out. The really nice part is the great UI though. Great. Wow. I really can't wait to start to use this.

With this update, I'll soon be making the switch to Safari for my primary browser. Sorry Firefox. Maybe IE8 will have a few surprises too...

Yes I'll be attending BarCamp Miami and the Future of Web Apps Conference in Miami this weekend. I'm really excited to be going! I've never been to Miami before so I'm kinda expecting something along the lines of Vice City and Scarface. But since I'll be at a tech conference, instead of Al Pacino holding a machine gun, he'll be holding an iPhone or talking on a bluetooth headset.

The FOWA site has been a great resource to network with people before the conference which is an awesome feature (and great design too). People from all around the world will be attending - programmers, entrepreneurs and designers. BarCamp will be on Thursday, a warm up for the main event on Friday, FOWA.

If anyone is going, give me a buzz and we can meet up.

I'll be writing a follow-up post with links to pictures and afterthoughts about the weekend as soon as the week is over and I'm back in Orlando. Stay tuned.

For those of you that have been to the portfolio side of this site, you may recognize the name MemberFuse™. For awhile now the place I work for, NFi Studios, who coincidently loves puppies, has been working on a social networking application called MemberFuse™. What is this MemberFuse™ you speak of? Well, I'll tell you...

Social networking is not just a fad and is not only limited to MySpace and Facebook anymore. Niche social networks are cropping up all over the web and have been getting noticed. Behance, Design:Related, Red Carpet Monday, Talent Database and Creative Binge are just a few that I can name off the top of my head. In that same vein, MemberFuse™ is a niche professional networking application for associations. Along with having a great set of key features specific for association use, it has all the features you'd expect from a social network today.

My part in this little project was the design. I designed the entire UI (user interface), did a good chunk of front end coding , CSS styling and spent many a night dreaming of blue and silver gradients. But, as they say, there is no "I" in team. A big pat on the back to everyone at NFi Studios for making this happen. Also caffeine. A big thanks to caffeine.

If you'd like to know more about MemberFuse™, check it out the website.

I was thinking about a few things today; things I need to do, work, my site and this blog were all on my mind. I had a couple ideas specifically about this blog that I would like to implement that hopefully all of you readers will like (yes, all 2 of you). So I'll get right to it.

From now on I'm going to go a more personal route with this blog. I'll still write opinion pieces on topics, products and web stuff because that's what I do and what I'm into but I'll also write more about what I'm doing, my side projects and different goings-on in Orlando and Central Florida.

I also will be restructuring the blog a bit including adding new categories and later on a new blog design (more on that in the future). I'll also be adding a bunch of stuff to my portfolio along with tweaking it a bit. My side project Helpmepaymyloans.com is close to launching a blog which I'm also writing for. Hopefully I can launch by Christmas and start SEO to get some visitors (fingers crossed).

I also want to announce I have a few cool projects coming up. I'll be helping my friend Cory design Florida Death Metal, as you already know from a previous post. I'm working on doing some t-shirt designs for another friend who will be starting up a t-shirt label soon. And I'm in the beginning stages of working on a couple websites. All this on top of my full-time spot at NFi Studios where we are currently prepping an amazing product to be released soon which I did the branding, UI design and marketing website for (more about that next month).

If you've gotten this far, thanks for reading. Stay tuned for future updates/announcements/rants/opinions and general coolness all around. Later.
