And Color of the Year Goes to…

Color of the Year

PANTONE 15-5519 Turquoise!!!

Pantone LLC, the global authority on color and provider of professional color standards for the design industries, today announced PANTONE® 15-5519 Turquoise, an inviting, luminous hue, as the color of the year for 2010.

Pantone goes on to explain Turquiose as envoking images of tranquil oceans, lush beaches, tropical paradises and healing during stressful times. Its also a popular color in fashion.

Depending on your point of view, Pantone may have missed the mark with last year's pick, Mimosa, which "embodies hopefulness and reassurance in a climate of change." Mimosa may have been wrong with "hopefulness and reassurance" but definitely lived up to the "climate of change" part.

Here's hoping 15-5519 Turquoise lives up to the predictions in 2010. Now I'm off to buy a turquoise t-shirt.

Grizzly Bear’s Two Weeks Music Video

This music video of Grizzly Bear's Two Weeks has the best concept & art direction I've seen recently. The video isn't official either; it was all made by a fan of the song. At first glance you'd probably think it was hand made, stop-motion work but its actually CG.

Check out the interview with Gabe Askew, the maker of the fan video for Two Weeks.

ABC3D

Check it. Typography and 3D combine in book form in this dope video (with a great tune by The Boswell Sisters too)!

New Tunes: Ghost Observatory

Ghost Observatory

Monday, a friend turned me onto a really innovative, unique electronic rock group Ghost Observatory. Awesome stuff. Funk, rock electronic and synth all rolled up and laid out nicely. So far I've tuned into two of their albums, Robotique Majestique and Paparazzi Lightning.

They are my new addiction while I'm at work (don't worry caffeine, you'll always be my number one addiction) that I just can't seen to stop listening to. I came to watch one of their music videos on YouTube and realized I've seen them preform before on Austin City Limits (yes, PBS). Anyway, great stuff. Give em a listen. Here's the video.

Burn After Reading

Burn After Reading

One of my most anticipated films of the year is the Coen brother's new film Burn After Reading. The Coens directed last year's best picture No Country for Old Men, and they are responsible for The Big Lebowski, Blood Simple and O Brother, Where Art Thou?, some of my favorite films.

Here's the synopsis:

This new dark-spy comedy stars Academy Award nominee John Malkovich as an ousted CIA official, whose memoir accidentally falls into the hands of two unwise gym employees (Brad Pitt and Frances McDormand) intent on exploiting their find. Also featuring George Clooney, Tilda Swinton and Richard Jenkins.

The (hilarious) red band trailer can be found here on Slashfilm.com. Can't go wrong when you give John Malkovich a hatchet.

Apart from it being in the running to be one of the best films of the year, it also has a really well designed poster. Very spy-like with a flavor of communist Russia which makes sense with the espionage theme of the movie. Also some great custom typography.

The Darjeeling Limited

The Darjeeling Limited

I finally got around to watching Wes Anderson's latest, The Darjeeling Limited. I'm a big fan of all of Anderson's work - Rushmore, The Life Aquatic, and Bottle Rocket. One of my favorite films, The Royal Tenebaums, is also one of his films. So I was surprised when The Darjeeling Limited didn't live up to my expectations. Continue reading…

World War 2 Poster Nostalgia

World War 2 Poster Nostalgia

Today I came upon a site that serves as a database/repository for old World War II-era propaganda/war effort posters.

The Government and Geographic Information and Data Services Department at Northwestern University Library has a comprehensive collection of over 300 posters issued by U.S. Federal agencies from the onset of war through 1945.
