Working within the Customs team, I collaborated closely with Legal, Compliance and Product stakeholders to define and build the Merchandise Processing Fee (MPF) Consolidation feature for our internal users.

Problem
The current manual Merchandise Processing Fee (MPF) Consolidation process was time-consuming, error-prone, and headcount-dependent. Its lack of scalability hindered our ability to win large enterprise clients.

Design a solution that allows the user to quickly identify and combine shipments into consolidations. The bottomline was to have more consolidations completed, free of errors and faster.

Challenge
The Customs platform's rigid backend had complex, dependent constraints, making changes costly and extensive. We shifted to a lighter approach, simplifying the feature while maintaining necessary broker functionality.

Learnings
Advocate for the user: Engineering constraints almost derailed having a good user experience but by promoting the users’ needs, we were successful in greatly improving their experience (and our metrics).
